Critically praised as having "successfully helped develop a specific voice amidst a sea of talented vocalists" and "flawlessly tackling the score," Matty Mitchell (they/them) balances a multifaceted career as a musical director, freelance oboist, vocal coach, and private music teacher. Having trained in professional orchestras, chamber ensembles, and pit orchestras, Matty’s performance background covers a wide range of musical styles. They received their bachelors degree in music education from Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University) and their masters degree in music performance from New York University. They studied with contemporary leaders in oboe performance (Matt Sullivan, Jonathan Blumenfeld, Nathan Hughes, Bert Lucarelli) and critically acclaimed jazz and classical pianists (Leah Claiborne, James Hillis, Andy Milne, Karina Bruk).

 

Matty has been celebrated for "aplomb playing" (Broadway World) and mindfully inclusive teaching approaches. Matty enjoys work in professional theatre and loves the opportunity to create impact and change through the magic of staged performances. Matty can be found in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia sight-reading piano scores, writing music, practicing yoga, and/or expressing gratitude to loved ones.
